Hypnosis is a natural, everyday state of focused awareness that produces a heightened sense of openness. You might recognize this state from a feeling of being “in the flow” with a creative project. This gentle state of awareness allows us to connect to the deep internal resources in the unconscious mind that might not always be available to us consciously. In clinical hypnosis, we apply these resources to our goals, naturally aligning your conscious awareness with your unconscious responses. This allows us to replace old unconscious patterns with new ones, increase comfort and wellbeing in the body, and make lasting changes in how you feel and perform.

what should I expect?

An integrative approach to coaching and hypnosis

Before we work together one-on-one, we’ll schedule a quick phone or video consultation where we can discuss your goals and my approach, and determine if we are the best fit to work together. When we’re sure it’s a confident “yes” for both of us, we’ll develop a plan to move forward. Each hypnosis session is different, varying based on the needs of the client.

We’ll meet online, in a place that is comfortable for you. Together, we’ll integrate brief, powerful hypnosis exercises with periods of guided goal-setting and deeper trance states to create an empowering program of change. As we work together, I’ll teach you practical tools you can use to support the changes you’re making. Hypnosis is not therapy, and doesn’t replace therapy: rather, it’s intended to integrate with other modalities such as therapy or medical care. This means most clients don’t see me for months or years—instead, it’s most often somewhere between two and eight sessions. My goal is to equip you with tools that really make a difference, and help you make the changes that matter to you, so that you get out of my virtual office and fully into your life, feeling incredible.

Hello! I’m Devon Adams, practicing clinical hypnotist and integrative coach since 2015.

Hypnosis took me by surprise. As a skeptical 20-something I signed up for my first hypnosis session (on skype! way back when!) feeling hopeful but not particularly convinced: yet those early sessions gave me back the dance career I had almost lost to anxiety and binge eating.

Fast forward to now, after nine years as a professional hypnotist, I want every new client to know two things about my approach;

1: you don’t need a magic wand.

Take it from me, a lifelong over-achiever who was always trying to “get it right” and follow all the rules in hopes of relief. Truth was, my striving for a magic success formula only exacerbated how out-of-control I felt about my sleep, my eating, my performance anxiety and procrastination.

2. you are the magic wand.

My approach to hypnosis is centered around YOU: so my job is to listen deeply, see your strengths, and help you make changes in a way that lets you actually harness those strengths so that change can come naturally. Working with me begins with a complimentary consultation to determine if we are the right fit. If it’s a hell-yes from both of us, we’ll develop a plan to carry you forward. Most clients see me for two to six sessions, though we’ll tailor a plan that suits you.

We’ll meet online, in a place that is comfortable for you. Imagine noticing big changes right in the midst of your own environment (comfy couch, curious pets and all), because where you used to feel stuck, you are finally implementing concrete tools that you know will support you when you run into the inevitable challenges of everyday life. We’ll work together via video from wherever you are, connecting with your deeper self as you make changes.

FAQs

  • My favorite clients are the ones who come to me skeptical: "I don't think I can be hypnotized." If this is you, don't worry--you're probably a really good candidate. Hypnosis is far from mysterious. It's a natural, everyday state of trance that we go in and out of all the time. If you have the ability to follow simple verbal instructions, can concentrate well enough to watch a short video, and are imaginative in a way that allows you to get caught up in a good story or imagine the way you'd like to feel in the future, yes, you can be hypnotized, though you must choose to do so. 

  • In reality, all hypnosis is self-hypnosis, even when assisted by a skilled hypnosis practitioner. Hypnosis is a process which requires your participation throughout. Applied self-hypnosis is a learned skill, and we will work together to help you learn to use this skill in your daily life.

  • No. Any trance or hypnotic session can come to a close whenever you choose. Because hypnosis is a participatory process, it is your choice to enter hypnosis and you can always choose to leave it. If you were left in a hypnotic state by your hypnotist, you would either return to full consciousness on your own or drift into a natural state of sleep and awaken after a short pleasant nap. 

  • Yes. You are not unconscious, but rather in a heightened state of awareness with a specific focus of attention.  You are in calm, relaxed control, aware of everything that is being said, and nothing happens in the session without your ongoing consent.  

  • Hypnosis can feel different for everyone. Some people feel very relaxed, while others feel simply calm and alert. Some people report feelings of weightlessness, tingling, or other physical sensations, but these sensations are temporary and will fade at the end of the session. Many people report feeling comfortably relaxed and aware…a little like a meditation: but we are making big changes within this relaxed state of awareness.

  • Many people imagine hypnosis is a passive process or something magical, but it’s actually a unique, flexible collaboration. Hypnosis will look and feel a bit different for each person because every client brings their own history and way of thinking, and their own measurement for success. Also, each hypnotist is unique. My practice is grounded and goal-oriented. If you’re willing to take action steps and have a readiness for change, you're likely to experience wonderful benefits from hypnosis.

  • My priority with every prospective client is that you receive the right care for your situation, and the right person to support you on your journey: your wellbeing is worth the extra time to find the right fit. This question is often best answered through a free consultation, where we can get to know one another, ask questions relevant to your case, and discuss options.

    In general, hypnosis is an integrative approach that is intended to support, rather than replace, psychotherapy and/or medical treatment. As a hypnotist, I do not diagnose or treat any medical or mental health condition, though hypnotic support can often provide valuable tools to integrate with medical or mental health care.

    I often work collaboratively with therapists and doctors to support clients in improving outcomes. In some cases, I may recommend you seek a referral from your doctor or therapist before we work together, or even refer you to such a provider as-needed.

  • Many clients walk out of our first session feeling radically different. Hypnosis isn't like traditional therapy—you don't need to commit months or years before you see a change. We will work together to clarify your goals and yardstick for success. Your results will reflect your intentions, your willingness to practice, and your genuine desire to change. Every client has a different path to change, so we will spend a bit of time developing a plan that will be right for you. Some issues only require one or two sessions, and others are best addressed over six or eight. Generally, we'll work together for a few sessions, and then you'll have the tools to make the change permanent in your life.  

  • You +Me + your fave cozy spot on zoom, meeting live online together where you already feel most comfortable. You probably already know that hypnosis is one of those things that works great through a pair of headphones, and part of what makes video sessions so effective is the fact that you are connecting every change you make to the environment where you’ll actually be putting that change into practice. While I miss my sunny old office in the heart of North Austin, I’ve realized that in the years since converting to 100% online video sessions, my clients have seen their best outcomes ever, because live online hypnosis is effective, powerful, and customized to you.

  • Unfortunately, hypnosis is almost never covered by insurance, so I'm not set up to take insurance at this time. If you have an HSA or FSA, you may be able to use this type of account to pay for hypnosis sessions, though coverage varies: check with your account carrier.

  • For One-on-one hypnosis sessions:

    Initial Intake Hypnosis Session (two hours): $325

    Follow-up Hypnosis Sessions (60-90 minutes): $295 each
